Britt Rynearson

Shibori Scarves

The term shibori refers to a variety of ways to fold and bind cloth to create patterns. Britt Rynearson uses the Arashi shibori technique, which consists of wrapping a pole with cloth, binding it with thread to create lines and submerging the entire pole into dye.

Scarf making is a laborious and involved process. First, the silk is cut into a unique shape, then hemmed, pressed and folded. The silk is then bound around a length of plastic ABS pipe. (It took her four hours to wrap her first scarf!) The bound silk is then usually dyed. The silk is rinsed and dried while it is on the pole. Once unwrapped, the texture and colors are revealed.

"My scarves are organic silk sculpture. Through the process they develop a life of their own. Using fabric, I can paint a landscape that moves and wraps around the body; ripples, waves, peaks, valleys. The movement of silk reminds me of water. Like the sea from day to day, each scarf is unique based on the conditions under which it was created."

Custom color choices are always welcome. Bridal services are offered for the bride, bridesmaids, Mother of the Bride or Groom, as well as special guests.
