John Dodero
Raku Pottery
Since 1970, John Dodero has been creating distinctive raku pottery in his studio in Oregon. John's particular raku method removes the glazed pot from the kiln while still red hot, then plunging it into an enclosed space with combustible material. The red hot clay ignites the combustible material, producing smoke that infiltrates unglazed clay turning it black, and causes the glazed parts to craze and leave intriguing black lines all across it. The overriding philosophy is to use the random crazing in juxtaposition to calm and simple forms.
John's background includes stints as a gallery owner, a studio potter, as well as a design consultant, all of which inform his current artistic choices in developing the simple yet powerful designs in his pottery. John has spent the last 15 years exploring Asian motifs and finding a way to fuse them with western sensibilities. He produces works that are not clichés and will withstand the test of time.
As usual, with handmade things, glaze colors and finishing touches will vary slightly from piece to piece, ensuring the uniqueness of each one.
