Mosaic Mirrors
Mosaic artist Angie Heinrich has been making her elegantly classical mirrors since 1998. She studied the art of mosaic making with masters in Italy, Spain and the US, where pride of workmanship and technique were instilled in her. The rhythm and symmetry of Moroccan art and architecture are sources of inspiration.
Starting with a ½" thick piece of birch wood, she then builds her design, using Italian smalti (a classical mosaic material), 24k gold, millefiori, vitreous glass, hand-painted glass, and beads. She then precisely shapes and sets each mosaic piece on the birch substrate. Colored cement is used to grout the piece, giving it a unified and finished look. As a result, each mirror is extremely resilient and lightweight and is equipped with hanging hardware. She strives to capture a sense of movement and rhythm with the grout lines that will finish the piece.
