Lanterns
With a background in painting and dancing, Seattle artist Philip Lewis incorporates both movement and color in these enticing lanterns. Meticulously cutting out shapes and designs with a very sharp knife, he then backs the openings with colorful translucent gels. When mounted onto a specially-made spoke within the lantern, the heat from the 40 watt bulb causes the paper to gently spin around. The resulting movement also send the colorful imagery onto surrounding walls, while the distinctive fan shapes at the top send the light onto your ceiling.
Philip also makes the lantern bases, incorporating a simple wooden frame, and mounting rice paper onto it. This allows for a very light-weight lamp, while the rice paper softens the bright colors of the gels. The movement is perfect for the Feng Shui student who wishes to add movement to a needed area of the living space. Children of all ages adore them!
